As of 2025, Queensland’s meat market has experienced notable shifts influenced by various factors, including weather events, consumer preferences, and economic conditions.

Cattle Prices and Market Dynamics

Recent heavy rainfall across northern and central Queensland has significantly impacted cattle market activities. For instance, Charters Towers experienced a temporary halt in sales due to the weather, and live export trades were postponed, with slaughter cattle prices around $3.50/kg live weight (lw). Feeder steers remained steady at approximately $3.40/kg lw, with Brahman steers fetching between $3.60 to $3.65/kg lw in Townsville to meet specific shipment demands.

Saleyard indicators for Queensland during this period were as follows:

  • Heavy Steer: 338¢/kg lw
  • Processor Cow: 282¢/kg lw
  • Feeder Steer: 370¢/kg lw
  • Restocker Steer: 396¢/kg lw

These figures reflect a stable market with slight variations compared to previous weeks.

Consumer Trends and Pork Popularity

In response to rising living costs, consumers are increasingly seeking affordable protein options. Pork has emerged as a favored choice, with sales increasing by 18% compared to the previous year. Its affordability is notable, with products like roast pork leg priced around $9.99/kg, making it up to 130% cheaper than certain cuts of lamb and beef. This trend is attributed to both cost-effectiveness and enhanced quality and flavor of pork products.

Holiday Season Consumption Patterns

“ During the Christmas season, economic pressures led consumers to opt for smaller portions of traditional meats. Primo Foods observed a shift from purchasing whole legs of ham to half or quarter portions. Despite this change, ham maintained its status as a central component of festive meals, with an estimated 8,000 tonnes consumed nationwide during the period.

Recommendations for Cost-Effective Meat Purchases

To manage expenses while enjoying quality meats, consider the following strategies:

  • Explore Bulk Buying: Local butchers often provide bulk deals that offer better value. For example, Horizon Grazing offers whole, half, or quarter beef carcasses, with prices around $15/kg dressed weight for a whole animal, including butchering and delivery.

  • Compare Prices Across Retailers: Supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths offer competitive pricing on barbecue essentials. A comparison revealed minimal differences, with a basket of items for a family of four costing approximately $103 at Coles and $102 at Woolworths.

  • Consider Alternative Cuts and Proteins: Opting for less popular cuts or different protein sources, such as pork or chicken, can provide cost savings without compromising on quality.

Staying informed about market trends and being flexible with choices can help consumers navigate the evolving meat market landscape in Queensland.
